My Gorongosa National Park Safari

It’s unfathomable for me how Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, now teeming with abundant wildlife, had been decimated by the country’s post-independence civil war, which ended in 1992. And yet, stepping onto its soil and meeting its people, I can now understand how a place so profoundly special could summon the resilience to revive itself, recovering with strength and spirit that’s truly inspiring to all who are lucky enough to visit. I was one of the lucky consultants asked to join a group to recce this “new safari destination”. And, oh boy, did we not know what we were missing!

What Makes Gorongosa National Park Special?

Located at the south of the Great Rift Valley, Gorongosa National Park is at the opening, so to speak, of two parallel fault lines which unzipped the earth, formed approximately 20 million years ago.

Its location alone is unique, and this is evident when you move through the seven different ecosystems. From the floodplains filled with antelope to the skies bursting with birdlife, this national park holds promise and hope.

Peace and Rejuvenation

On August 1, 2019, the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Accord agreement, forged between Mozambique’s government and the opposition Renamo party, solidified the national park’s role as a symbol of unity and renewal. Declared a “Park for Peace”, Gorongosa now stands as a beacon of hope, fostering both conservation and human development for the communities that share its remarkable landscape.

I’ve travelled all over Africa, visiting safari destinations like Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. But visiting Gorongosa in Mozambique had a unique and profound impact on me. The combination of its history – knowing where it has come from and learning about where it’s going – makes you feel a part of something much bigger! It’s an incredible feeling knowing you’re directly contributing to the growth and sustainability of such a special part of the world.

My Accommodation Highlights

After flying 30 minutes up the Pungwe River from Beira, the capital of Sofala Province in central Mozambique, we arrived in paradise. We fell out of the small plane into the friendly arms of our safari guide, Richard, and we immediately resonated with our tracker’s name, Lucky.

Once in the vehicle, we enjoyed an ice-cold 2M (a refreshing favourite local beer), and it was mere minutes before we were greeted by an enormous bull elephant, calculating his pathway towards us with a particular mopane tree on his mind. We made our way through the towering fever tree forest until we reached our first stop: Wild Camp.

Wild Camp

Nestled under a canopy of trees and opening up to a waterhole right in front of us, the eco-friendly, solar-powered Wild Camp is the perfect place to kick off your shoes and immerse yourself in nature. Being one of two camps in the Gorongosa National Park, which covers over 370,000 hectares, you’re not going to get as exclusive and remote as this.

We settled into our Meru-style tent, which has everything you need, like a comfortable bed, crisp linen, flushing toilet, running water and my personal favourite, the bucket shower. If you haven’t tried one before, you’re missing out on being transported back to a much simpler time! Hearing the leaves crunch beneath my boots as I walked toward the crackling fireplace, with the Milky Way painting the pristine African sky, this was the perfect spot to settle down with a refreshing gin and tonic.

Muzimu Camp

If the sound of Wild Camp is not up your alley, then you can choose a more luxurious option, Muzimu Camp, which means “spirit”. The only other lodge in the area, Muzimu combines well with Wild Camp, offering a bit more comfort when it comes to wooden walkways, larger rooms, standard showers that you’re used to, and a more established main area with a swimming pool. The camp overlooks the Mussicadzi River, which flows with water in season.

Across both Wild Camp and Muzimu Camp, the food was top-notch! Some of the best food and meal options I’ve had on safari with an array of fresh ingredients grown just outside of the national park by the local communities. I must mention their coffee, too! Exclusive to the country, it’s grown and harvested on Mount Gorongosa, another interesting day-trip option to explore during a visit here. Here, you’ll also find the very rare green-headed oriole, a bright yellow and green bird you’ll only find in this part of Africa.

Why Gorongosa is a Must-Visit Destination

Still wondering if a Gorongosa National Park safari is for you? Here are some of the reasons it will tick every box for these particular type of travellers.

For Adventurous Travellers

Gorongosa offers guests the chance to explore areas where only camp guides are permitted, with no public access, ensuring an exclusive and intimate experience. Since it’s a relatively “new” safari destination to the wider safari world, this destination is pristine and so untouched, offering guests a truly authentic safari experience.

For Conservation-Minded Travellers

Embark on Your Own Gorongosa National Park Safari

Gorongosa’s grit is etched into every riverbend and every root reaching deep into the earth. You can feel its resilience as soon as you touch the soil, smell the trees, converse with its people and appreciate its wildlife.

Gorongosa showed me that a safari isn’t just about the big game – it’s about appreciating every layer of the ecosystem you’re visiting, knowing the people that call it home, and contributing to the future prospects of how nature will take its course and correct itself if we allow it to.

Our Travel Experts are ready to not only take you here but to make your Gorongosa National Park safari the best experience you’ve ever had. Let’s start planning!

Phoenix Rising: A Story of Restoration

A far cry from its war-ravaged past, Gorongosa‘s future looks bright thanks to a diverse, dedicated group of individuals and community members making conservation history through this decades-long rewilding project. The Greg Carr Foundation is instrumental in the restoration of the land and commitment to community upliftment.

First Impressions of Gorongosa

Here, we share insights from our Rhino Africa Travel Experts Carl Preller, Janine Gous, and Justine Ryan, who recently visited the national park in Mozambique and stayed at Muzimu Lodge.

Diverse and pristine, Gorongosa has seven ecosystems three times the size of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa. Currently, the lodge footprint in the south is enough to captivate your senses and safari stays of at least five nights are encouraged to allow the experience to seep into your soul.

The well-travelled trio tell me that with its vast landscapes, diverse wildlife, and unique conservation efforts, Gorongosa is an outstanding wilderness destination. Perhaps one of Africa’s last of the great natural strongholds. If matched with the right kind of traveller, the unconventional luxury of this premier destination could work for both seasoned safari-goers and first-timers. Due to the vastness of the landscape, it provides an environment that enables exclusive encounters with nature.

More Than a Feeling

Carl Preller, who has been with Rhino Africa for nine years, was “blown away” by the sheer size of the reserve, stretching over 370,000 hectares. He says the scenery changes dramatically every few minutes, from fever tree forests to open plains and winter thorn forests.

He says, “It’s almost like Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana in one. Every day was different, and we saw no vehicles at all.”

Carl recommends Gorongosa for return travellers looking for something different and unique. He also suggests combining it with a premier safari destination like Sabi Sand for first-time visitors. Consider following your safari with one of Mozambique’s gorgeous beach destinations to elevate your experience of the area.

Location and Access

Long-standing safari consultant Justine highlights the unique location of Gorongosa National Park, reminiscent of the Lower Zambezi, Mana Pools and Okavango Delta, thanks to the diversity of ecosystems.

The national park offers access to game drives, walking safaris, and seasonal water activities like canoeing and boating. With only 14 game drive vehicles in 377,000 hectares, the low vehicle density ensures an exclusive experience without the hefty price tag.

Gorongosa National Park, serviced by the reliable commercial airline Airlink, the flight from Johannesburg to Beira takes one hour and 45 minutes. Next, take an onward Safari Air 30-minute bush plane flight from Beira Airport, followed by a 30-minute game drive from the airstrip to Muzimu Camp.

Authentic, Amazing Accommodation

Justine rates the food and beverage offerings at Muzimu Lodge as top quality, with fresh ingredients and 5-star quality. Light, fresh cuisine is the order of the day. If you love a good salad, you’re in luck.

The staff here are down-to-earth, friendly, optimistic and engaging, earning a 5-star rating for customer service. The team is proud and passionate about their rejuvenation project, and it shows. They’re keen to partner with the tourism supply chain to get the word out about their fantastic commitment to the ecosystem.

Justine says, “The guides, the scenery, the expansive park – [it] feels like you are the only people exploring the national park. Pure, wild, untouched wilderness.”

The Home of Memorable Wildlife Experiences

While Gorongosa is a wilderness immersion destination, the wildlife and birdlife opportunities are exceptional. Justine notes that the guides have extensive experience in Southern and East Africa, providing a top-quality interpretive safari to guests. The lodge managers and safari guides are well-travelled. They’ve cut their teeth in the luxury safari industry at some of Africa’s most revered heart-quickening safari brands.

The national park’s accommodation offering, Wild Camp and Muzimu Lodge, respectively, offers excellent value for money, with unique wildlife experiences that add multifaceted elements to the safari. The exclusivity and limited game vehicles enhance the overall experience.

If all goes according to plan, Muzimu Lodge’s guiding team will increase by four new trackers in 2025. Gorongosa’s restoration is a work in progress that has spanned two decades.

Key project stakeholders work tirelessly and with fervent dedication, rallying the surrounding communities and building bridges of understanding, cooperation, and posterity. And this is just the beginning.

In addition to safari game drives from the end of March to the end of May, guests may embark on water-based activities such as canoeing and boating safaris to discover water-dwelling fauna, hippos, crocodiles and aquatic birds. Morning and afternoon game drives aside, Muzimu Lodge offers night drives and walking safaris, subject to certain favourable conditions.

Making The Most Of Muzimu Lodge

Justine recommends adding an extra night or two to fully experience all the activities, including a visit to Mount Gorongosa, home to the green-headed oriole, an endemic species highly sought-after in birding circles.

The fly camp at Mount Gorongosa offers an unforgettable sleep-out experience punctuated by an avian chorus to remember. Birdlife is prolific, with the trio clocking over 80 species in around three days.

Learn More Than You Imagined

Aside from the safari activities, guests can visit the Pangolin Rescue Center, which provides opportunities to glean insights into this gentle, secretive species, which sadly is the world’s most trafficked animal. The EO Wilson Laboratory offers a fascinating insight into the ongoing scientific research activity.

Authentic community visits shed light on the excellent work helping to manage human-wildlife conflict in the communities through chilli pepper cultivation and beekeeping along the national park’s buffer zone. Doing so discourages elephants from wandering into the community’s crops. Further, as a potential chilli pepper supplier, the community farming initiative is being eyed by hot sauce titan Nando’s.

As a result of the rewilding efforts, the reserve supports a diverse population of predators and prey. However, the landscape does not support giraffes, rhinos or cheetahs. Going out and seeing what you can find on a game drive, safari walk, canoe, or boat provides incomparable excitement and enduring memories.

The Feel-Good Factor

Janine was impressed by Gorongosa’s innovative conservation efforts. She felt a part of a conscious movement to rebuild and salvage the land once devastated by civil war. The passion and energy of the guides and lodge staff were evident, making her feel connected to the national park’s impact and conservation initiatives.

Life-changing Gorongosa Moments

Janine has worked at Rhino Africa for eight years and shares two standout moments from her trip. A seasoned safari-goer, she was captivated by the birdlife on the first day, describing it as a bird haven. The landscape seemed to explode with a cacophony of calls and colours as myriad species flittered between the trees.

Another memorable highlight was the first sundowner stop, where they enjoyed gin and tonics by a large body of water, surrounded by grunting hippos and basking crocodiles, as the sky turned deep shades of pink and orange. She says, “Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a first-time visitor, Gorongosa and Muzimu Lodge promise a safari adventure like no other.”

Gorgeous Gorongosa: An Authentic Safari Success Story Worth Knowing

If you’re wondering where to stay in Canggu, you’re not alone. For a long time, Canggu was a place only locals, ex-pats and surfers knew about. That has certainly changed and now Canggu is a popular place to stay in Bali, especially for digital nomads. Canggu is laid back, with beaches and rice fields and so many delicious places to eat. Here you can surf (or learn to surf), relax, eat well, do yoga and be in beautiful surroundings. In our accommodation guide, we highlight the best places to stay in Canggu, including our favourite luxury resorts, hotels, and villas, along with the best locations.

Where To Stay In Canggu? Best Areas.

Canggu Accommodation Map

So where to stay in Canggu? Firstly, you do need to think about how you will get around before you decide what area to stay in Canggu. If you have your own transport, then you have no limitations there. If you want to be within walking distance of the beach and cafes and don’t drive a scooter, only specific areas will suit your needs.

Getting Around

Canggu is a large and spread-out area, and public transportation options are more limited compared to places like Seminyak. Scooters are a popular way to get around, but unless you have a proper license and experience with Bali’s road conditions, I would recommend avoiding them.

When we stay in Canggu, we choose locations so we can walk or cycle to get around. If you want to be within walking distance of restaurants and shops, I suggest staying near the intersection of Jl. Batu Bolong and Jl. Batu Mejan, and heading towards the beach. This area has a lot of dining and shopping options.

However, keep in mind that Canggu is a large area, so you won’t be able to walk everywhere. It’s best to choose a specific area that you want to explore and base yourself there. Additionally, while some parts of Canggu are walkable, there are few sidewalks or pedestrian-friendly spaces, so walking along the roads is not always safe or enjoyable. You can also walk along the beach to reach different spots.

If you don’t hire a scooter, getting around Canggu is a bit different from Seminyak. In Seminyak, you’ll find plenty of Bluebird taxis available for easy transportation. However, in Canggu, there is a local driver system instead, which we’ve found a bit tricky to use. Despite this, you can still use apps like Go-Jek and Grab to get around. These are probably the best options for transportation. Just keep in mind that Canggu can have heavy traffic, so car rides may take longer than expected.

The Best Areas To Stay In Canggu

So once you have decided how you will get around Canggu, it’s easier to decide which area of Canggu to stay in.

So I would divide Canggu into four main areas; Batu Balong, Echo Beach, Berawa and Pererenan. I would say that Batu Bolong and Berawa are perhaps the most popular areas, but they all offer something unique. Here’s a little bit more about each area.

Batu Balong Beach & Jalan Batu Bolong

This area is centred around Batu Bolong Beach and the road Jalan Batu Bolong and has always felt like the main area of Canggu to us. There are a lot of restaurants, beach bars and boutique shops in this area. Near the beach, you will find the Canggu institution Old Man’s, a laid-back bar where people gather, eat and drink. Batu Bolong beach is a nice part of the beach in Canggu, with surfers, warungs, people walking their dogs and relaxed vibes. Not far from Batu Bolong Beach is also where you will find the unique 5-star hotel, Hotel Tugu

Although it is a very busy area, it’s a great place to stay if you don’t have a scooter as the beach, shops and restaurants may all be within walking distance of your accommodation. If your aim is to walk everywhere, we probably wouldn’t stay further away from the beach than say Jalan Tanah Barak area. This is our pick for where to stay in Canggu for a first-time visit and the best area to stay if you want to walk to get around.

Echo Beach

The Echo Beach area is near Batu Balong Beach but has a *slightly* less busy feeling. This area includes the roads Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan (near the beach) and Jalan Padang Linjong further away from the beach. The area near the beach is busier with beach bars like La Brisa Bali. It’s also home to the beautiful luxury 5-star hotel Como Uma Canggu.

Jalan Padang Linjong is a little less developed so you will still see some beautiful greenery and a more local feel. Although you can still find great cafes like Copenhagen and yoga studios like Samadi along this road. Samadi also has a great Sunday Market with organic local farmers and artisans.

Berawa & Jalan Pantai Berawa

Another popular area is Berawa. This area is centred around Jalan Pantai Berawa and is a little more spread out but it’s a beautiful area with restaurants, cafes, shops, Berawa beach and Finns beach club. Berawa is just north of the Batu Belig area of Seminyak (one of my favourite areas of Seminyak), so it also has closer access to Seminyak than the other areas of Canggu.

Certain areas in Berawa would also be great options to stay in if you don’t have your own transport as there are a lot of food options and the beach, but I do find this area to be a little more spread out when compared to the Batu Bolong area.

Pererenan

Pererenan is the area around the road Jalan Pantai Pererenan and Pererenan Beach. This area is the most peaceful and has beautiful rice fields (although there are fewer rice fields here as development continues at a fast pace). Having said that, it’s also a little more removed from the rest of Canggu. You will need to go further to get to the other areas of Canggu if you stay here, but the beautiful surroundings are worth it, especially if you have a scooter.

I probably wouldn’t recommend staying in Pererenan if you don’t have your own transport unless you intend to mainly be in this area. The main exception would be if you stay within walking distance of Pererenan beach, as there is now a walking bridge from Pererenan to the Echo Beach area.

Pererenan is the best area to stay in Canggu if you’re looking for a little more tranquility.

Rice Field Canggu

How Long To Stay In Canggu?

How many days you need in Canggu really depends on why you are visiting. If you’re visiting as part of your Bali holiday, then I would say 3 nights would be a nice amount of time to eat in some of the cafes and warungs, go to the beach and see the area. There aren’t a lot of sights to see in Canggu, it’s more about enjoying the lifestyle. Of course, if you have more time you could easily stay longer in Canggu.

If you’re basing yourself in Canggu as a digital nomad, obviously you will be staying for a lot longer, and you will find most of the things you need for a long-term stay in Canggu.

As you have most things you will need at Desa Hay, including an on-site restaurant, you can make the most of the quieter surroundings. The post Where To Stay In Canggu: Our Canggu Accommodation Guide appeared first on Almost Landing – Bali.

Wondering where to stay in Ubud? Ubud is known as the cultural heart of Bali. Although it has become more touristy and busy over the years, it always finds a way to be soothingly peaceful. A traffic jam turns into a Balinese ceremony walking through the streets. Turn down a side lane and suddenly you’re in a beautiful rice field. When I think of Ubud, the first things that come to mind are monkeys, spas, yoga studios and incredible food. And although the days can get quite busy, the mornings and evenings can be much calmer, which is why we always recommend staying in Ubud rather than doing a day trip. In our accommodation guide, we highlight the best places to stay in Ubud, including our favourite luxury resorts, hotels, and villas, along with the best locations.

Where To Stay In Ubud? Best Areas.

Ubud Accommodation Map

Wondering what area to stay in Ubud? The two main options are staying in the village itself or staying on the outskirts. There is also another option, which is staying in the nearby neighbourhoods (just outside the centre).

In the map above, you can see the main area of Ubud Village, with the main streets being Monkey Forest Road, Jalan Hanoman and Jalan Raya Ubud. So what part of Ubud is best to stay in?

Option 1: Staying In Ubud Village

Overview

Busy with tranquil pockets if you know where to look, and plenty of things to do within walking distance.

Type of traveller: Perfect for first-time visits to Ubud, solo travellers, couples, families, digital nomads, budget stays; there is something for everyone unless you want a secluded stay. It’s also the best option for those wishing to do a lot and are not confident renting a scooter.

Nearby attractions:

  • Monkey Forest
  • Ubud Palace
  • Ubud Market
  • Campuhan Ridge Walk
  • Restaurants: PICA, Ibu Susu, Clear Cafe, Milk & Madu, Warung Ibu Oka

Transport options: Most things within Ubud town centre are walkable. To go outside of the village you can hire a private driver or use Grab/Gojek.

Pros:

  • Walkable to restaurants, attractions, rice field walks
  • Less time in traffic
  • Great base to fit in a lot of activities

Cons:

  • Can be very busy, but if you choose your accommodation and activities mindfully you can still have a somewhat tranquil stay and experience the natural beauty of Ubud.

Should You Stay In The Centre of Ubud?

There are lots of pros to staying in the village, the main one being that most things will be within walking distance.

If it’s your first time visiting Ubud, it will make it easier to explore the streets, eat at the restaurants, attend yoga classes, go shopping and visit different spas. You will also have easy access to Ubud Monkey Forest, Ubud Market, Ubud Palace and other attractions. Staying in the centre is also ideal for solo travel.

However, staying in central Ubud will be more touristy and much busier than if you stay outside of town.

Having said that, we have been pleasantly surprised by how quiet and peaceful some of the places we have stayed in the centre of Ubud have been, from small family-run hotels to luxury resorts. We have included our favourite places to stay in Ubud Village in our accommodation guide below

If you choose to stay in the centre, you can still make the most of Ubud’s natural beauty. You can access rice field walks from the village within a short walk, visit waterfalls like Tegenungan or hire a private driver for day trips to nearby areas.

What Part Of Ubud Village Is Best To Stay In?

The main streets of the village are Monkey Forest Road, Jalan Hanoman, Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Dewisita and Jalan Gootama.

Jalan Raya Pengosekan is also central, but the farther south you go, the further you are from the heart of Ubud.

Jalan Suweta and Jalan Sri Wedari are also very central, but long roads, so the further north you go, you get further away from the town centre.

Jalan Bisma is very central but also a little quieter and more removed from the main streets, so a great area. There are, of course, some smaller streets around these areas also.

Staying in Ubud village is a great pick for people without a scooter, first-time visitors, and people who prefer to be within walking distance of the main sights and food.

Option 2: Staying In Nearby Villages

Two of the main nearby villages are Penestanan Village and Nyuh Kuning Village.

Overview

Quieter villages with local charm that are slightly removed from Ubud town but not as convenient.

Type of traveller: Digital nomads, longer stays, people wanting to be close to the centre of Ubud but a little removed.

Nearby attractions:

  • Campuhan Ridge Walk (walkable from Penestanan)
  • Monkey Forest Sanctuary (reachable from Nyuh Kuning)
  • Yoga studios
  • Restaurants: Moksa Ubud (Penestanan), Alchemy Bali (Penestanan), Yellow Flower Cafe (Penestanan), Sage (Nyuh Kuning)

Transport options: Some parts of these areas are walkable to Ubud town (albeit not a short walk), but realistically you will need some form of transport like a scooter, taxi or shuttle. For activities further away you can also hire a private driver for a half day or day.

Pros:

  • Local village feel
  • Quieter than Ubud town

Cons:

  • May still need a scooter or transport to get to Ubud town depending on where you stay
  • May still need to sit in traffic to get to certain attractions and restaurants
  • Not as many restaurants and attractions in the immediate vicinity

Nyuh Kuning Village

Nyuh Kuning village is located behind Ubud Monkey Forest. It’s a beautiful area but the street connecting it to the main town is for walking and scooters only.

Depending on what area you stay in, it will be about 10 – 20 minutes walk to reach Monkey Forest Road. If you need to take car transport, it will still take 10 – 20 minutes (maybe longer pending traffic) to reach the main area as you need to go the long way around.

So although it can still be a great option if this suits you, it’s worth noting as it looks closer on a map than perhaps it is in practice.

Penestanan Village

Penestanan village is an area just outside the main area of Ubud village.

It’s a popular place to stay for digital nomads and those seeking an authentic village atmosphere, yet still close to the main area.

Although you can still technically walk to the centre from here, it’s probably a better choice to stay in this area if you have a scooter.

Option 3: Staying On The Outskirts Of Ubud

Overview

Stay amongst green jungles and rice paddies, here is where you’ll find natural beauty and tranquillity, although you may be quite far from Ubud Town. Some of the best luxury hotels in Ubud are located on the outskirts.

Type of traveller: Perfect for couples, family, honeymoon, and those looking for unique places to stay, tranquillity and natural beauty.

Nearby attractions: It depends on what area you specifically stay, however, you will need to drive to most activities, attractions and restaurants. Ubud luxury resorts usually have an excellent range of activities in the local area or further that you can access from the resort. We’ve had some of our favourite experiences staying at luxury resorts in Ubud, from riding bikes through the surrounding villages and greenery, and rice field walks and chatting with people from the local community.

Transport options: Luxury hotels usually have a free shuttle bus into Ubud town multiple times per day, or you can hire a scooter or private driver.

Pros:

  • Natural beauty – located within or near jungle or rice fields
  • Tranquil
  • Many uniquely designed luxury resorts with elements of Balinese culture and traditions
  • Luxury hotels can have incredible facilities and activities within the surrounding local areas

Cons:

  • Some areas are quite far from Ubud town if you plan on spending time here
  • Need to use transport to get around
  • Limited access to restaurants outside of the hotel

Should You Stay On The Outskirts?

A lot of Ubud accommodation is located on the outskirts, some are not too far away from the village, while others may be as much as 30 – 50 minutes away. Some of the main areas are Sayan, Payangan, Tegalalang & Kedewatan.

These hotels are often surrounded by beautiful jungles, lush greenery or rice paddies and offer experiences to explore the surrounding nature and community.

So for us, the thing we love about staying on the outskirts of Ubud is definitely the natural beauty and tranquillity.

If you don’t ride a scooter, we would recommend staying at luxury resorts rather than budget hotels outside of Ubud. You will be quite isolated, so with a luxury hotel you will have plenty of facilities, including a shuttle service to take you into the centre.

Despite this, as you are located further away, you may not have the same time to explore Ubud centre, which is something to consider when deciding.

But suppose you’re staying in a beautiful hotel with restaurants, a pool, a spa and other experiences. In that case, you will also spend your time relaxing and enjoying the local area surrounding the hotel.

If you choose to stay in the outskirts, we would definitely recommend that you choose accommodation with a good restaurant, as you will most likely be having some meals there.

Which Option Is Right For You?

There’s no right or wrong option, just different. We’ve stayed in both the village and different areas around Ubud and have absolutely loved all the experiences.

You could also combine the two, and spend a couple of nights in Ubud Village, and a couple of nights in the outskirts to relax, enjoy nature and see another side of Bali. This would be a great option for a first time visit.

How Many Days Do You Need In Ubud?

Wondering how many days in Ubud is enough? We would recommend at least 3 – 4 nights, but you could also definitely stay longer.

3 to 4 nights is ideal as it would allow you enough time to explore the centre and experience a few things to do in Ubud and the surroundings. Walk through the beautiful rice fields or the beautiful Campuhan Ridge, visit Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, go swimming in a waterfall, so many options.

But there’s a lot more you can do in this area and it can also be a great base for some interesting day trips. So if you plan to do more, we would add more nights.

On the other hand, if you want a more relaxed holiday, it’s also a beautiful place to spend some more time and enjoy nature.

Nuestros Mejores alojamientos en Catarata Victoria

We could gush (get it?) about the jaw-dropping Victoria Falls until the hippos come home, but let’s be real – you’ve got to see this African wonder for yourself. And why should you stay at any other place but the best lodges in Victoria Falls? Some of Africa’s most sought-after classic hotels and lodges can be found under the spray of the world’s largest sheet of falling water. Here are our 12 top picks, in no particular order – because, like the falls, they all bring their own thunder!

The Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty

The Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty

1. Victoria Falls Hotel

Location: Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls National Park (10-minute walk from Victoria Falls)

Let’s start with a little bit of historic elegance. Established in 1904, The Victoria Falls Hotel was the first hotel built in these parts and is set in the Victoria Falls National Park. It even has a private path leading directly to the entrance gate of Victoria Falls. With epic views of the Victoria Falls Bridge, gorges below and spray from the waterfalls, the grand dame of Victoria Falls is steeped in history and plenty of colonial grandeur.

The rooms and suites are decorated in a style that cleverly mingles a bygone age with today’s modern conveniences. Meanwhile, the corridors reflect the past glories of the Empire, with exquisite lounges wrapping you in seclusion and serenity. For some elegant entertainment, the Livingstone Room specialises in silver service, elegant dinners and dancing. Then there’s the Stanley’s Terrace, showcasing a delectable à la carte menu, renowned High Tea and a sundowner venue that’s hard to beat.

2. Old Drift Lodge

Old Drift Lodge, on the banks of the Upper Zambezi – a setting you won’t forget. The main lodge is designed for those who appreciate the finer things, with a spacious dining area, a bar that begs you to linger, and a lounge with sofas that practically pull you in. Step outside, and you’ll find a fire pit perfect for storytelling and a riverside deck that launches unforgettable boating excursions.

4. The Elephant Camp

Location: Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls National Park (10 kilometres from Victoria Falls)

The Elephant Camp, a standout among the best lodges in Victoria Falls, offers a rare balance of seclusion and convenience – tucked away in Victoria Falls National Park while being just a stone’s throw from the Falls. The camp’s décor is stylishly simple, with bold African touches and a modest level of luxury that does not detract from the inspiring surroundings.

Kisawa Sanctuary: A Celebrity-Worthy Escape

While Sam had high praise for &Beyond Benguerra, Azura Benguerra, and Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort, it was another property, Kisawa Sanctuary, that truly stole the spotlight.

“What stands out most about Kisawa, aside from its stunning beauty, is the incredible sense of privacy it provides – it’s a perfect hideaway for celebrities seeking unrivalled seclusion.” – Samantha.

Kisawa is an exceptionally exclusive eco-retreat featuring a selection of one-, two-, and three-bungalow residences. Set on a sprawling 300-hectare sanctuary of forest, beach, and dunes at the southern tip of Benguerra Island, it offers a truly discreet setting.

“They refer to their accommodations as “bungalows”, but that’s an understatement. These are HUGE, grandiose, and ultra-luxurious – nothing like the typical idea of a bungalow.” – Samantha.

“Kisawa’s bungalows are completely secluded – you can’t see anyone else, the main area, or any other residences. You’re even provided with a little electric vehicle to explore the grounds, winding through charming paths lined with local vegetation – it’s quite enchanting.” – Samantha.

Every detail at Kisawa is meticulously chosen, with incredible attention to detail. The décor, crafted by local artisans, perfectly complements the lodge’s aim to redefine beach luxury in a genuine yet chic way, all the while evoking a sense of freedom and spaciousness throughout your stay.

“The rooms are impressively spacious with high ceilings, featuring a lounge area, bedroom, dressing area, bathroom, and a deck with a pool. These pools are far larger than the typical plunge pools, and each bungalow also includes a pool lounge area, a pool kitchen, a beach attendant, and a butler. You’re pampered from start to finish.” – Samantha.

“The décor is vibrant and stylish, with a distinct vintage flair. For instance, each room comes with a record player, and guests can choose their preferred music style, which is curated and placed in the room before arrival. Even the light fixtures have a retro feel, reminiscent of the 70s and 80s, adding to the modern-meets-old-world ambience.” – Samantha.

“The natural wellness centre at Kisawa is nothing short of spectacular. I had the opportunity to experience a 15-minute sound bath treatment, a first for me. The warmth and genuine hospitality of the staff made it even more memorable.” – Samantha.

When you imagine postcard-perfect beaches, what comes to mind? Pristine white sands, azure waters, and gently swaying palms, right? While those classic images are undeniably dreamy, if you’re seeking something more authentic, uniquely African, and equally enchanting, look no further than Mozambique! Two of our esteemed Travel Experts, Samantha Myburgh and Peggy Bzinkiewicz, recently returned from an extended visit to this off-the-beaten-path destination. I had the pleasure of interviewing Samantha, who volunteered to share what’s new and exciting in Mozambique.

Why Mozambique?

At Rhino Africa, we’re passionate about the “safari and beach” holiday combination. I mean, what could be better than traversing Bigterritory in the Greater Kruger before unwinding in a stunning seaside locale? According to Sam, Mozambique is the ideal beach counterpart to your Southern Africa safari adventure.

“Mozambique is the ideal beach destination for a combined bush and beach itinerary. Just as Zanzibar complements East Africa, Mozambique perfectly suits Southern Africa, aligning with the prime safari season.” – Samantha.

Why Mozambique Instead of, Let’s Say, Seychelles?

While many travellers opt for Zanzibar or the glitzy shores of Mauritius and Seychelles, Mozambique remains less on the radar and more of a hidden gem. Samantha, who has explored Africa’s coastlines and islands extensively, believes the country has a unique charm all to its own.

“Mozambique is the quintessential ‘African’ beach destination. I’ve been to Seychelles, Mauritius, and beyond, but Mozambique stands out as more authentically African in every way.” – Samantha.

What Makes Mozambique “Authentically African”?

For those familiar with Africa, you’ll understand the concept of “authentically African.” For those who aren’t, our expert Samantha explains:

“In Mozambique, you’ll meet locals, possibly visit villages, see informal settlements, witness local fishermen and experience the vibrant culture firsthand. You’ll also have the chance to savour cuisine with a traditional African twist.” – Samantha.

And, speaking of cuisine, Mozambique’s economy thrives on fisheries, so get ready for a smorgasbord of seafood!

“Throughout my trip, I was spoiled for choice when it came to seafood. It’s the main food source in Mozambique. If seafood isn’t your thing, there are other options, but you’d be missing out. From prawns and line fish to lobster and shrimp omelettes – the seafood selection is spectacular.” – Samantha.

Don’t Forget its Tidal Allure!

Another notable feature of Mozambique is its pronounced tidal movements, especially along the mainland, compared to the Indian Ocean Islands.

Low tide makes for interesting scenery

Low tide makes for interesting scenery

“The tidal aspect is a delightful surprise! It reveals a landscape perfect for photography and fascinating beach walks. So, instead of just strolling beside the water, you venture INTO the beach itself, discovering a kaleidoscope of shells and ocean creatures. It’s like a hidden world you never knew existed.” Samantha.

Where Did You Go in Mozambique?

Samantha experienced a myriad of Mozambique’s most reputable seaside properties, both on the mainland, in and around Vilanculos, and in the Bazaruto Archipelago.

“It was incredibly beneficial to see all the properties in one trip. That was the most enriching aspect. I literally saw EVERYTHING, which is rare for an excursion like this. It allowed me to compare each place in its current state with a fresh perspective, assessing which of our guests would best suit each property.” – Samantha.

“Sussurro’s rooms are HUGE! And the breeze – let me tell you, it might sound ridiculous – but the shutters on each side of my bungalow created a beautiful cross breeze. The ever-present ocean air was a refreshing reminder that I was at the beach, which is something you don’t get when you’re confined to a room with air conditioning.” – Samantha.

In the 1960s, Gorongosa National Park was a thriving safari destination in the heart of Mozambique that welcomed guests from all over the world. Then, sadly, it fell victim to the devastation of the country’s Civil War from 1977 to 1992, and it’s only as recently as 2016 that the park has become entirely safe to visit. With the wildlife population all but depleted at the turn of the century, the national park’s future seemed bleak. Then emerged a beacon of hope, in the form of Greg Carr, an American philanthropist, alongside the Carr Foundation, who undertook probably the largest rewilding project on the planet, as Greg and his incredible team have sought to restore Gorongosa to its former glory over the past two decades.

The Wonder That’s Gorongosa National Park

I recently had the opportunity to visit Gorongosa (for the third time), but the first in several years. I was spellbound by the incredible transformation that had taken place. I initially went in search of the green-headed oriole bird but discovered a whole lot more! The park now teems with life once again, proudly hosting over 200 lions, 200 African wild dogs, and a staggering variety of bird species.

I’m not the world’s biggest birder, but accompanied by a couple of “twitchers”, we managed to rack up 159 bird species in just three days (a number of which were lifers)! But Gorongosa’s breathtaking scenery and unparalleled biodiversity truly set it apart, making it a true gem on our planet.

Africa’s Healing Powers

During my visit, and despite my 25 years in the travel industry, I found myself immersed in activities that connected me with nature in the most profound ways. One of Mother Nature’s most impactful and untold gifts is the drop we experience when in her presence in the parasympathetic nervous system, which decreases respiration and heart rate and increases digestion.

It always fascinates me when talking to guests that they can never quite pinpoint why they feel so different when visiting Africa or have such a strong desire to return. Well, you won’t find it in any brochure, but Africa is the ultimate treatment for stress and trauma relief!

While my parasympathetic nervous system has become so attuned to dropping at just the thought of travelling to the bush, I experienced something quite extraordinary in Gorongosa that I’ve never experienced anywhere else.

I’m not sure if it was swimming in the pristine waterfalls on Mount Gorongosa, soaring in a helicopter over the expansive flood plains, walking pangolins at daybreak with the pangolin rehabilitation team, the game drives I never wanted to end, or exploring the research centre at Gorongosa’s headquarters in Chitengo, but every moment was a testament to the wonders of the natural world.

A collage of guests enjoying a different activities in Gorongosa National Park

Simply Sensational and Within Easy Reach

What makes Gorongosa even more remarkable is its easy accessibility. Located just a short flight away from Johannesburg, guests can easily embark on an unforgettable journey to this conservation haven.

And for those seeking additional adventures, a few days on the beach in Vilanculos, again some of the best beaches in the world, or a quick hop from the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, Gorongosa is a perfect complement to your Southern African experience.

Beach at Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel in Mozambique

However, perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Gorongosa’s revival is its holistic approach to conservation, recognising the crucial link between protecting wildlife and uplifting local communities. In truth, what I discovered is that what started out as a conservation initiative has evolved into one of the greatest humanitarian projects I’ve ever had the joy of experiencing.

I witnessed firsthand the vast investment into early childhood development, education and the many sustainable initiatives in the surrounding areas, from beekeeping and coffee plantations to land restoration and reforestation efforts, uplifting the communities surrounding the park. The impact numbers are staggering! I mean, 550 newly trained beekeepers producing nine tonnes of honey a year was just one of the incredible projects!

Where to Stay in Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa now boasts two welcoming camps for guests to enjoy, namely Muzimu Lodge, which offers comfort and exclusivity, and the Wild Camp, immersing visitors in the national park’s essence. This blend of luxury and wilderness allows for a truly transformative experience that combines Botswana’s vast expansiveness with the Sabi Sand’s abundant wildlife.

A collage of Gorongosa Wild Camp and Muzimu Lodge

You’re in for a treat! Image Credit: Gorongosa Wild Camp and Muzimu Lodge

But trust me, this park is so spectacular and offers so much to do, which reminds me – you have to see the fever tree forests! You’ll want to spend as little time as possible in camp and as much time as possible exploring this natural wonder.

As I reflected on my own emotive experience, I recognised that while science might somewhat disagree, I think it might have something to do with the fact that this is an unspoilt paradise, unchanged for thousands of years, and might well be where humanity originated.

Imagine teleporting back into prehistoric times, when dinosaurs roamed Earth, and there was no artificial light source in sight or a rumbling engine in earshot. Enter a Gonarezhou National Park safari, an experience so utterly wild and remote that you’ll feel like you’re one of the last people on the planet. So, join me as we take a closer look at why a Gonarezhou National Park safari in Zimbabwe is one of our favourite African secrets

Gonarezhou, The Place of Elephants

Yes, I know, the word “Gonarezhou” is quite a mouthful, seeming like just a bunch of letters scrambled together. So, to help you pronounce it, repeat after me: “Gonna-Re-Zhoo”.

It means “place of elephants”, and although we unfortunately can’t promise dinosaur sightings, you can enjoy prehistoric-looking elephants, rhinos, and crocodiles instead!

Southern Africa’s Stripped Back Safari Star

Gonarezhou National Park is located in the southeast corner of Zimbabwe, bordering Mozambique, and is the country’s second-largest national park.

It’s massive and absolutely wild. In fact, it’s one of the most authentic safari experiences you get on our continent. If you want to really lose yourself in Mother Nature’s untamed beauty with no restraints, then this is a dream come true for you.

As it’s so remote and rugged, we recommend a fly-in safari with a charter flight from Harare International Airport to a private airstrip near the national park. We don’t recommend self-drives here, as you’re really heading into the belly of the wild.

A Glimpse of Gonarezhou’s Jurassic-Like Landscapes

When I said this national park is reminiscent of prehistoric times, I meant it. There are very few places in the world with such a variety of untouched ecological spaces.

Picture impresive reddish and white sandstone cliffsoverlooking sweeping Serengeti-like grasslands dotted with giraffes, nyalas, impalas and other wildlife roaming free. Next moment, you’re surrounded by woodlands, nyala berry trees, and winding rivers in between.

There are more than 493 plant species, of which 333 are woody species, and 160 are herbaceous species. However, I can’t help feeling there might be some species out there we are yet to discover So, put on your best explorer hat for a Gonarezhou National Park safari!

What Wildlife Can I See on a Gonarezhou National Park Safari?

When on a Gonarezhou National Park safari, you’ll likely never encounter anyone else. It’s just so vast and such an off-the-beaten-track destination that you’ll feel like you have it all to yourself.

As the name suggests, you can see lots of elephants as it has a large population. And, yes, you can also see the rest of the Big 5, namely the lion, leopard, rhino, and African buffalo.

On land, there are 89 large mammal and 61 small mammal species roaming free here. There are also 116 reptiles, 34 amphibians, and more than 50 fish species.

It also makes sense that you can see some endangered species since this is such a unique setting. For example, the black rhino, African wild dog, lappet-faced vulture, and the near-endemic turquoise killifish are all found here.

The Save River is a popular gathering place for wildlife, and we love that the water can look quite clear, so you can easily spot those species lurking beneath the surface!

Explore the Gonarezhou National Park

There are many different safari activities to enjoy on a Gonarezhou National Park safari. When going on game drives, you might have to take a slight detour… on a boat!

Yes, often the terrain is so wild that you have to jump off your game drive vehicle, onto a boat to cross a river, and then on a diffrent vehicle. We love how this just adds another layer of adventure to the experience.

You can also go on walking safaris for a more immersive, up-close exploration of the vegetation and smaller details.

Take the Adventure up a Notch

Let’s get even wilder by heading out on a fly-camping adventure! Yes, it’s camping in its most basic form (without you having to pitch any tents, of course. You just pitch up!). Think unfiltered nature all around, sitting around the crackling fire, and feeling that deep feeling of inner peace settle over you.

This activity is for the true adventurer who will enjoy bucket showers, hearty yet basic meals, and just meeting Mother Nature face-to-face.

Leaving on a Jet Plane

There is a specific kind of silence just before a plane takes off. The aircraft is rumbling beneath you, almost quivering. Then suddenly, in a remarkable burst of speed for something so large, the plane is off, racing down the runway before finally being airborne, signalling your trip’s official start.

And suddenly, as the clouds part, you see it, crystal clear waters dotted with rolling hills and lush greenery. It has an almost Riviera-like look to it but better because this is Lake Kariba – the world’s largest man-made freshwater lake in the world!

It’s that time of year again when the whole family gears up for the long-awaited holiday, whether it’s a road trip or a flight. There’s always that last-minute rush to ensure everyone has packed everything they need.

But all the chaos will melt away the moment you set foot in Bumi Hills Safari Lodge, greeted by the stunning infinity pool and the serene view of the lake from your balcony.

You and your family will hop up onto the game vehicle, snuggle up, and enjoy the thrilling feeling of the wind rushing through your hair as you search for the Big 5.

Romance

Could your journey to Lake Kariba have a more romantic purpose? Perhaps it marks the beginning of your honeymoon, a tranquil escape from the routine with no children in tow.

Or is it your maiden voyage as a couple, often dubbed as the ultimate relationship test? Regardless, Changa Safari Camp, in all its divine rustic glory, is the perfect setting for a little rom-com-worthy romance. Set on the shores of Lake Kariba with views of the Matusadona mountains, this camp is peaceful and secluded.

Imagine the two of you, side by side, mastering the art of campfire cooking under a sky dusted with stars. There’s something undeniably intimate about preparing a meal together in the wild—chopping fresh ingredients, listening to the distant call of a fish eagle, and feeling the warmth of the flames flickering between you.

With a rocket stove efficiently channeling heat, you can whip up anything from a hearty potjie to a simple yet flavorful grilled fish, caught fresh from the lake that very day. Every bite carries the essence of adventure, seasoned with laughter and a hint of smoky charm.

Whether it’s a celebratory toast to your new journey together or simply an appreciation of the quiet beauty around you, this is the kind of experience that lingers—one that turns an ordinary meal into an unforgettable chapter of your love story.

2. Do Nothing Or Everything

The beauty of a Lake Kariba safari holiday is that you can do as much or as little as you like! You can start your day off snuggled up on the game vehicle tracking a pride of lions, go on a guided bush walk or take a short boat ride across the lake to the scenic Sanyati Gorge.

Or you can simply enjoy some quiet time by the pool, on the deck of your tent or even take a little afternoon nap.

 3. Private Sundowners

Yes, we know it’s more eating, but truthfully, aren’t all relationships merely deciding, or arguing, about where you’re going to eat next? A private sundowner for two is the perfect start to the evening.

Watch the sunset on a private beach, have a few laughs, and a few more drinks before adjourning to your tent and enjoying an outdoor bush bubble bath.

Multi-Generational Lake Kariba Safari

Could your plane be journeying to this destination for a multi-generational trip? Imagine parents, older kids, and grandparents embarking on an adventure reminiscent of a scene straight out of “The Lion King”.

Picture the pride gathering, with generations coming together on a private houseboat. It’s the perfect way for a little family bonding.
