Where To Stay In Gili Air? Area Guide

Gili Air Map Lombok
Map of Gili Air showing key areas

Gili Air is a small island in Lombok, Indonesia, about 10 minutes by fast boat from Lombok’s mainland, a 2.5-hour speedboat ride from Bali’s mainland or 2 hours from the Nusa Islands

Most places can be reached within a 10 – 20-minute bicycle ride.

The main areas to stay in Gili Air can be divided into staying by the beach or staying inland, or by North, South, East and West. But where is the best area to stay?

✅ Quick Picks – Best Areas to Stay in Gili Air

  • 🌴 East Side: Best beaches for swimming & snorkeling
  • 🚤 South Side: Best for easy boat access & a livelier tourist vibe
  • 🌅 West Side: Best sunsets and peaceful spots
  • 🚲 North Side: Best for a laid-back, local feel away from crowds
  • 🌿 Inland: Best for tranquility and a more authentic island experience

Staying By The Beach Or Inland?

Honestly, in our opinion, although accommodation on the beach is lovely, it doesn’t really matter if you’re staying right on the beach or not. The island is so small that even if your staying inland it will be very close to the beach, and perhaps a little more tranquil.

We stayed inland in a beautiful pool villa, which was only a 5-minute bicycle ride to the nearest beach and was on a gorgeous quiet road with palm trees and some local houses around.

Inland would be our pick for the best place to stay for a more local feel. The east side beaches would be our pick for where to stay in Gili Air for the best beaches.

Should I Stay In The North, South, East Or West Part Of Gili Air?

Gili Air Beaches

The east side of the island is the best area to stay in Gili Air for swimming and snorkelling, as it has the best beaches. This is the main area for the sea turtles.

The south side of the island is perhaps the busiest as this is where the jetty is and where boats arrive and leave. So this would be our pick for where to stay if you don’t want to walk far with luggage but also don’t mind a more touristy feel.

And the western side is the best area to stay in Gili Air for sunsets, where you can see Mount Agung on Bali.

Sunset Gili Air

In terms of getting your luggage to your accommodation, you can get a cidomo which is like a small horse and cart, but as we honestly didn’t know about the treatment and care of the horses, we decided not to use them. You could also hire a bicycle if you had a backpack only.

We walked to our accommodation with our bags, which was fine but will be slow. Keep in mind some roads are sandy/dirt, particularly part of the west and north roads around the beachside, so this will be harder.

Gili Air Island Streets

But overall, due to the small size of Gili Air, it’s one of the only places where location doesn’t really matter. I would decide based on the best accommodation for you, whether that be a guesthouse, hotel or villa.

You really can reach all areas of the island by a short walk or bike ride, so below we have our accommodation guide with all of the best places to stay in Gili Air, Lombok.

Should I Stay On Gili Air or Gili Trawangan?

Gili Air may only be a short boat ride from Gili Trawangan, but the two islands are very different.

One question we had the first time we visited the Gili Islands was which Gili Island to stay on. All of the Gili Islands have no motorised transport, and all have beautiful clear water surrounding them.

Gili Trawangan has the most tourists, restaurants, shops, bars etc. It is the busiest island and the one to stay for nightlife. Having said that, there are areas of the island where you can escape the crowds and have a more tranquil stay if that’s what you’re after. It also has some beautiful beaches.

Read More: Where To Stay In Gili Trawangan

Gili Air is a quieter island than Gili Trawangan with fewer tourists. It still has some delicious restaurants and things to do. I personally preferred the white sand beaches here for swimming and snorkelling.

Gili Air would be our pick for where to stay in the Gili Islands for a nice balance of activity, things to do and yet fewer crowds. It’s a great option for couples and families. Having said that, I think out of all the Gili Islands, most people will find something to love about Gili Air.

Gili Meno is another of the Gili Islands, that is known for being the quietest and the most untouched. It’s popular for romantic stays, honeymoons and people looking for a peaceful stay.

How Long To Stay In Gili Air?

Personally, I think 2 days and 2 nights is a minimum. Spending time here is all about relaxing, taking it slow and enjoying nature, which is difficult to do if you have a short stay.

You could also easily spend up to a week on Gili Air if you are happy to have a slower-paced holiday and fully enjoy the island time, or if you are staying here to do a dive course or something similar.

If you have the time I would recommend picking two of the three Gili Islands to stay a couple of nights on each, as each island has a completely different personality.

Wondering where to stay in Kuta & Legian, Bali? These areas might not be my top picks for where to stay in Bali, but there are still plenty of great reasons to stay here. They offer really good value, they’re right by the beach, close to the airport, and just south of Seminyak. In our accommodation guide, we share the best places to stay in Kuta and Legian including beachfront resorts, family-friendly stays, villas and affordable hotels, along with the best areas to stay.

Our Overall Favourite Places to Stay

If you’re short on time, here are our absolute favourite hotels in Kuta & Legian:

There are so many incredible places to stay in Kuta & Legian. You can see all of our favourite places to stay in our accommodation guide below.

You will also find our area guide for all of the best locations. So if you can’t decide, keep reading…

Where To Stay In Kuta & Legian? Best Areas For Couples, Families & More

Kuta Beach Bali

Kuta and Legian are located next to each other, along the west coast of Southern Bali. To the north of Legian is Seminyak. To the south of Kuta, you will find Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Although Kuta and Legian may not be my first pick of locations to stay in Bali, there are definitely some reasons you would choose to stay here. But Kuta and Legian is a large area, and some parts are, in my opinion, better than others.

✅ Quick Picks – Best Areas to Stay:
South Kuta (Tuban): Best for families & beach access
Central Kuta: Best for nightlife & busy atmosphere
North Kuta: Best for a laid-back vibe & close to Legian
Double Six Beach (North Legian): Best for couples & walking to Seminyak along the beach

Stay Near The Beach

So where’s the best place to stay near Kuta Beach or in Legian Bali? If you can, stay either on the beach or not too far from it. Here you will get a sense of more space and openness than some of the smaller, busier streets. You will also be able to easily start and end your day by the beach, which will give you a relaxing element to your stay. Here you can walk to many of the restaurants, shops and other things to do in Kuta & Legian.

The main roads in Kuta and Legian are Jalan Kartika, Jalan Pantai Kuta, Jalan Legian Kaja and Jalan Raya Seminyak. If possible, avoid staying any further inland than these streets, so you can reach the beach and restaurants easily.

Kuta Boardwalk Kuta Beach

Best Areas In Kuta

South Kuta (Tuban Beach) is a great area for families, with some great resorts, and Waterbom Bali (water park) and Discovery Mall nearby.

South Kuta also has one of the prettiest stretches of beach in this area, just south of the Kuta boardwalk along the beach. It’s one of the only areas of Kuta where hotels can be completely beachfront, as most other areas there will be a main road between the hotel and the beach.

South Kuta has its perks, but otherwise, I would aim to stay as north as possible, as central Kuta can be quite hectic. So if staying in Kuta, south Kuta or North Kuta (closer to Legian) would be the best place.

Staying Close To Seminyak

Although you’re staying in Kuta or Legian, you may still find yourself wanting to shop and eat in Seminyak. Although it looks close on a map, if you need to get a taxi, there are certain times when the traffic can get heavy and it can take longer than you would expect.

If you’re looking to stay as close to Seminyak as possible, then the area around Double Six Beach is the most northern part of Legian, where it borders Seminyak Beach. This way, you could walk along the beach to reach other parts of Seminyak.

Is It Worth Staying In Kuta & Legian?

Legian Beach Bali

Well, that depends on you and what you’re looking to get from your Bali Holiday. Although they are not my favourite areas to stay, I have enjoyed staying there.

These areas may be busy and somewhat over-developed, but because they were developed a long time before places like Canggu, they almost give me a nostalgic feeling now.

So why stay here?

They’re in a super convenient and central location, near Bali International Airport. They are also right by the beach, which is great for sunsets and learning to surf. It’s also home to some nice beach clubs.

There’s also a nice boardwalk by the beach, which means you can go for a walk or a run on a nice paved surface, which is not always possible in Bali.

There are plenty of things to do, such as a water park, local markets, a couple of shopping malls (Discovery Shopping Mall and Beachwalk Shopping Center), and affordable restaurants and shops.

It can be a popular spot for backpackers, with plenty of bars and clubs. However, some parts are also great for families too.

And there’s a great range of accommodation, from more affordable 5-star hotels, family-friendly resorts, 4-star hotels and of course budget hotels too.

So as you can see, there are some great reasons to stay in these areas. If you do decide to stay here, and if it’s your first time visiting Bali, I would recommend combining it with another location to see a different side of Bali. Places like Ubud, Uluwatu, Sidemen, or East Bali would provide a nice contrast.

The post Where To Stay In Kuta & Legian (2025): Our Favourite Hotels & Areas appeared first on Almost Landing – Bali.

Wondering where to stay in Jimbaran Bay? Often seen as just a luxury resort hub, Jimbaran is full of local charm — from traditional Balinese ceremonies and small temples to bustling seafood and produce markets. It’s also a great base for exploring the beautiful beaches of Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula. In our accommodation guide, you’ll find the best places to stay in Jimbaran, including our favourite luxury resorts, beachfront hotels, and villas — plus the best areas to stay.

Contents

Where To Stay In Jimbaran? Best Locations.

Where To Stay In Jimbaran Map

Jimbaran runs along the southern coast of Bali and stretches slightly inland. It’s located about a 20-minute drive south of Ngurah Rai International Airport, depending on traffic.

The closer you can stay to the beach, the better — most of Jimbaran’s charm is found near the coastline and the main road (Jl. Raya Uluwatu).

While some accommodation options inland may still be labeled as Jimbaran, I recommend staying close to the beach and main road for the best experience. This is where you’ll find the top beachfront resorts, seafood restaurants, and the most relaxed atmosphere.

One thing to consider is which section of Jimbaran Beach to stay in. Each area has its own feel and proximity to different attractions:

  • South Jimbaran is my personal favourite. It has a beautiful stretch of beach, stunning views of the Bukit Peninsula, and is home to my favourite seafood restaurants on the beach. It’s also close to other great dining options. Although not in the middle of the areas, I would consider this area to be the centre of Jimbaran.
  • The middle part of the beach has more of a local feel and is close to the traditional market and some incredible restaurants (like Cuca, one of our favourites). It’s a nice balance between beach access and everyday local life.
  • The north end of Jimbaran Beach, known as Kedonganan, is right next to the seafood market and just south of the airport. Although this area still has a lot to offer, it’s a little farther from the main resorts and restaurants and tends to feel less relaxing.

📌 Our Pick: The best areas to stay in Jimbaran are the southern end and middle section of Jimbaran Bay — especially if you want beautiful beaches, easy access to restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere.

How Many Days Do You Need?

We recommend spending at least 2 – 4 nights in Jimbaran, but you could also easily spend one week here if you wanted to relax, especially if you were staying in one of the luxury resorts.

There’s not a long list of things to do in Jimbaran, so two nights would be just enough to get a taste of the area.

Four nights gives you plenty of time to relax, visit the seafood market, enjoy the beach, explore the traditional market, and savour a seafood dinner on the beach.

It may not have the number of restaurants that are in Seminyak and Canggu, but it still has some delicious eating experiences. One of our favourite places to eat in Jimbaran is Cuca.

Jimbaran Bay is also a good base to experience other areas of Bali. Uluwatu is just next door and is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Bali. If you plan to spend a few days in Uluwatu with Jimbaran as your base, we recommend a one-week stay.

In our accommodation guide, you’ll find the best places to stay in Sanur, including our favourite luxury resorts, hotels, and villas, along with the best locations.

Where To Stay In Sanur? Best Areas

Boats In Sanur Bali

Sanur is located along the east coast of Bali, north of Nusa Dua and south of Candidasa. It’s about a 30-minute to 1-hour drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport. A lot of accommodation options are located along or near the beach. But some are located further inland.

So where to stay in Sanur? We recommend staying either on the beach or not too far from it. Some accommodation options are located further away from the beach on the other side of the highway, which I personally think would take a lot away from the Sanur experience.

The main part of Sanur is located around Sanur Beach and the main street of Jalan Danau Tamblingan. The most central area to stay in Sanur is along the main street between Jalan Pantai Sindhu and Mertasari Beach. We would definitely recommend staying in central Sanur to make the most of your time here.

Is It Worth Staying In Sanur?

Sanur is often overlooked as a place to stay in Bali, with people often choosing areas like Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu or Canggu. But we think it’s definitely worth staying in Sanur, especially if you have been to Bali before or you’re looking for a quieter, laid-back stay.

What we like about Sanur the most is that feeling of almost stepping back in time and experiencing Bali as it was many years ago. A sense of quiet nostalgia as you roam or cycle the streets. Sanur, in the best possible way, has managed to protect itself against the constant ever-evolving changes that many places in Bali experience. That’s not to say that you can’t find delicious restaurants or modern luxury resorts, merely that it’s not defined by these things.

Sanur has so much to offer, from its traditional night market where you can taste delicious Indonesian dishes, to a beautiful boardwalk along the beach, not to mention swimmable beaches. Sanur is also a common gateway to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, for either day trips or the next stay in your Bali Itinerary

We often get asked, is it better to stay in Sanur or Seminyak? Honestly, the two places are very different. We would say stay in Sanur if you’re looking for a quieter place where you can swim and ride bikes but also have access to some great restaurants and accommodations options. Stay in Seminyak if you want a busier vibe, endless amounts of incredible restaurants, boutique shops and nightlife.

How Many Days In Sanur?

How many days you need in Sanur is pretty dependent on your Bali trip. If you’re planning on having one base and doing some day trips to explore more of Bali, then staying in Sanur for the entirety of your trip is possible.

If you’re combining a stay in Sanur with a stay in another location in Bali, which is what we would recommend, then I feel like 2 – 3 nights would be a minimum to be able to take advantage of ‘relaxing’.

To decide how long to stay, look at the main things you want to do in Sanur and how long this would take you, and then decide how much additional time you would want to spend relaxing and swimming at the beach to get your ideal length of stay.

We absolutely loved our stay at Hyatt Regency Bali, a stunning 5-star hotel in Sanur. The staff are really friendly, the expansive gardens are so beautiful and the food at the on-site restaurants is delicious. This beachfront hotel is also home to 3 outdoor pools, including a beachfront pool and kids pool.

As Bali’s first-ever 5-star resort, along with a recent 5-year renovation, we think this is perhaps the best place to stay in Sanur. Hyatt Regency Bali has deep roots in Bali, making for a very special stay.

A beautiful luxury hotel located in the heart of Sanur, this also happens to be one of the newest resorts in the area. Described as a modern interpretation of a Balinese village, this resort has a beautiful nod to Balinese design and lush tropical gardens.

Tandjung Sari Hotel

There is a beautiful quote from the founder of Tandjung Sari, “My hotel is my living room, my guests are my friends”. I think this sums up the special feeling of this unique beachfront hotel. It actually originated in the 1960s as a house for the owners and developed over time into the boutique resort that it is today.

Here you will find a range of bungalows, that is, stand-alone cottages in walled gardens, built by local craftsmen.

On the grounds, you will find a salt-water swimming pool, a gym, a library and an open-air restaurant, all immersed within lush tropical gardens.

The Pavilions Bali | $213 | Check Availability

The post Where To Stay In Sanur (2025): Our Favourite Hotels & Areas appeared first on Almost Landing – Bali.

Wondering where to stay in Nusa Dua, Bali? This peaceful beachside destination is known for its luxury resorts, calm swimmable beaches, and laid-back atmosphere—perfect for families, couples, or a quiet base to explore Bali. While it doesn’t have the cultural depth of Ubud or the dining scene of Seminyak, Nusa Dua has its own charm: beachfront boardwalks, water sports, luxury spas, and high-end resorts—many with private beaches. In our accommodation guide, we share the best places to stay in Nusa Dua—from stunning 5-star resorts to great-value hotels—plus the best areas to base yourself.

Our Overall Favourite Places to Stay

If you’re short on time, here are our absolute favourite hotels:

There are so many incredible places to stay in Nusa Dua. You can see all of our favourite places to stay in our accommodation guide below.

You will also find our area guide for all of the best locations. So if you can’t decide, keep reading…

Where To Stay In Nusa Dua? Best Areas.

Nusa Dua Bali

Nusa Dua is located along the eastern coast of Southern Bali, only a 20 – 30 minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport. A lot of accommodation options are located along the beach. But some are located further inland.

So where to stay in Nusa Dua? We recommend staying close to the beach to make the most of the area’s top attraction.

Nusa Dua can be further split into three distinct areas; Tanjung Benoa, Central and Southern Nusa Dua.

  • Tanjung Benoa (North): Ideal for water sports and more casual, family-friendly accommodations and affordable beachfront stays. It’s also home to some excellent Balinese restaurants like Bumbu Bali. We prefer the southern end of Tanjung Benoa as you’re more central and can more easily explore by foot.
  • Central Nusa Dua (middle): Best area for walkability, beach boardwalk and access to beaches and shops. Perfect if you want to stay in luxury resorts but prefer to walk around and explore by foot.
  • Southern Nusa Dua (Sawangan to Pandawa Beach): Ideal for luxury resorts, seclusion and cliff-top views. Great for a relaxing stay but more remote.

📌 Our Pick: Central Nusa Dua — beautiful resorts and you can explore on foot. Choose Tanjung Benoa for budget and family fun, or South for pure relaxation and luxury.

Is It Worth Staying In Nusa Dua?

  • ✅ Great for: Families, couples, honeymooners, beach lovers, and luxury stays

  • ✅ Good base for day trips across Bali

  • ⚠ Not ideal if you’re focused on local culture or nightlife

  • 💡 Tip: Combine Nusa Dua with Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu or East Bali for a more diverse trip

Staying in Nusa Dua is a great option for those looking for a luxury stay, relaxation and beautiful swimmable beaches.

It’s perfect for families, with facilities for kids at luxury hotels like kids’ clubs, as well as access to on-site restaurants, swimming pools, tennis courts and water sports.

It’s also a great choice for honeymoons and couples who want to relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches and luxury resorts.

Nusa Dua can also be used as a base for day trips to other areas of Bali, which we would definitely recommend to experience more of Balinese culture and traditions, as well as other sides of Bali.

However, we actually think a stay in Nusa Dua is best combined with a stay in another area, to get a more well-rounded experience of Bali. Take a look at our accommodation guides for Ubud, Uluwatu, Seminyak, Canggu, and East Bali here.

And if you’re on more of a budget, although this area wouldn’t be our first pick for a budget stay, there are still some affordable options too.

On the other hand, Nusa Dua is not for you if you only want to stay in one area in Bali, and you came for the culture and local experiences.

How Long To Stay?

Recommended Stay Duration

  • 🧘‍♀️ For relaxation: 2–4 nights

  • 🚐 As a base with day trips: 5–7 nights

  • 💡 Tip: Combine a stay here with more cultural destinations in Bali

How many days you need is pretty dependent on your Bali trip. If you’re planning on having one base and doing some day trips to explore more of Bali, then staying in Nusa Dua for the entirety of your trip is possible.

If you’re combining a stay in Nusa Dua with a stay in another location in Bali, which is what we would recommend, then I feel like 2 – 4 nights would be a minimum to be able to take advantage of ‘relaxing’.

Deciding how long to stay is less about how long it would take for you to tick off all the things to do, and more about how long you want to spend relaxing, swimming at the beach etc.

Although it is a fabulous place to stay for couples, I’m really impressed by the attention The St. Regis Bali also gives to families. There is a children’s learning centre onsite where kids can take part in yoga, cooking classes, learning how to play Balinese musical instruments and hands-on conservation. They also have welcome rituals and turn-down rituals catering to younger guests. Along with tiny afternoon tea and evening outdoor cinema and children’s pools.

Ritz Carlton Bali

A luxury resort perched on the cliffside with views of the Indian Ocean, the Ritz-Carlton is a special place to stay in Nusa Dua.

Enjoy the beachfront infinity pool and a range of complimentary experiences, like an evening beach bonfire.

There are plenty of incredible dining options here, with two standout restaurants. The Beach Grill is the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood in a beachside setting. And Bejana is a beautiful cliff-top restaurant with delicious Indonesian Cuisine, which we absolutely loved.

Seminyak is much busier, has more boutique shops, restaurants and nightlife, has great beaches for sunset, drinks and liveliness, but not so great for swimming.

Nusa Dua is great for swimmable white sand beaches, luxury resorts & spas, and a relaxing stay.

It’s a laid-back paradise where no motorised transport is allowed, and the beaches have clear blue water and white sand. Known as a party island, Gili Trawangan has transformed into a place that offers a variety of experiences, catering to all kinds of travellers. Where To Stay In Gili Trawangan? Best Areas.

Gili T Beaches

So what is the best area to stay in Gili Trawangan? Gili Trawangan is a small island and although you can easily reach most places relatively easily by bicycle, different areas cater to different types of travellers and each have a distinct vibe.

The main areas to stay in Gili Trawangan can be divided into North, South, East and West. Depending on your preferences, you’ll find something to suit your needs.

Most accommodations are located either near the beach or just a few streets inland.

However, the further inland you stay, the less convenient access to restaurants and nightlife may become. Some of the inland roads are also not as well-lit at night if you plan on venturing out for dinner or nightlife.

See our accommodation guide below for the best hotels on the beach. Some of our favourites are Pondok Santi Estate, Pearl Of Trawangan, Cocana Resort, Gili Teak Beachfront Resort, and Wilsons Retreat

Which Side Of Gili Trawangan Is Best?

If you’re wondering which part of Gili Trawangan is best to stay; North, South, East or West, the answer is it depends on what you want out of your holiday.

We’ll go through each area so you can decide what the best area is for you. Most of the island has beautiful white sand beaches, although not all are suited for swimming with coral reefs close to shore.

East Gili Trawangan

The east side of the island is the main part of Gili Trawangan. This is also where the fast boat will drop you off (the main street is the beach street near the port).

It’s a great area to stay if you want easy access to restaurants, bars and activities.

However, as most of the nightlife is in this area, some accommodations can be noisy at night. You can still find quiet places to stay (usually the further from the pier the quieter – but not always), just read hotel reviews carefully to make sure the hotel you choose isn’t affected.

The northeast beach is one of the best areas for swimming, although many of the beaches in Gili Trawangan have their pros and cons.

The east side is our pick for where to stay in Gili T for nightlife, but also for convenience and restaurants.

South Gili Trawangan

The south side of the island is known for its peaceful vibe. It’s also home to some beautiful accommodations, like Pondok Santi Estate.

It’s still within walking distance of restaurants and the port, and the southwest side of the island is a great spot for sunset views.

West Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan sunset

If you’re looking for a quieter, more serene stay, the west side of Gili Trawangan Island is ideal. Each time we go back to Gili T the west side is more developed, but definitely still a peaceful area.

There are fewer food options on this side (although Casa Vintage on the south-west side is a fabulous place to eat), so you may find yourself having to walk or ride your bike over to the east side often. But it’s perfect if you prefer peaceful evenings and stunning sunset views.

If you’re staying on the west side of the island, I’d definitely recommend staying in a hotel with breakfast included, and potentially an onsite restaurant, depending on how long you are staying on Gili Trawangan.

The west side is a great choice for where to stay in Gili Trawangan for families and those seeking tranquillity.

North Gili Trawangan

This area has a quieter, laid-back vibe. There are some great accommodation options on the north side of Gili Trawangan.

You can also catch the sunset from here, and in some areas, there is the possibility of swimming with sea turtles.

Booking Accommodation

Booking.com

We love using Booking.com to look at all the accommodation options in Gili Trawangan. They have a wide variety of choices, from luxury hotels, boutique hotels, villas and homestays.

I also find the many user reviews really helpful when making a decision. It’s our favourite way to book hotels, so it’s a great place to search if you’re looking for more options.

In my opinion, Pondok Santi Estate is one of the most beautiful places to stay in Gili Trawangan.

Not only does it have a beachfront location, but the accommodations and facilities spread out over a vast amount of luscious green land. As this area was once an ancient coconut plantation, there are plenty of coconut trees within the grounds.

The space, nature, friendly staff and traditional design make for an authentic experience. The onsite restaurant is delicious, we had some of our favourite food in Gili Trawangan here.

Gili Trawangan FAQ

How Many Days Do You Need In Gili Trawangan?

Given that it takes a little bit of effort to get here, and ‘island life’ is all about slowing down, I think 2 days and 2 nights is a minimum, but 3 – 7 nights is what we would recommend. Spending time here is all about relaxing, taking it slow and enjoying nature, which is difficult to do if you have a short stay.

If you have one week in Gili Trawangan, you could enjoy a slower-paced holiday, relax, ride bikes, and go to the beach. There are also plenty of places that run scuba diving courses on the island.

If you have the time I would recommend picking two of the three Gili Islands to stay a few nights on each, as each island has a completely different personality. Gili Air is a favourite of ours and feels quite different to Gili T, so the two are great to combine.

Staying By The Beach Or Inland?

Gili T Beach

Most of the accommodation on Gili Trawangan is close to the beach, so it doesn’t make much difference if you are right on the beach or a few streets back from the beach.

I would make sure that your accommodation isn’t too far inland, however, as you are on an island holiday and it’s nice to get to the water sooner. Some of the inland roads are also not as well-lit at night if you plan on venturing out for dinner or nightlife.

See our accommodation guide below for the best hotels on the beach, but some of our favourites are Pondok Santi Estate, Pearl Of Trawangan, Cocana Resort, Gili Teak Beachfront Resort, and Wilsons Retreat

How Do I Get My Luggage To My Accommodation?

If you’re wondering how to get your luggage to your accommodation on a non-motorised island, there are a few options.

You can get a cidomo which is like a small horse and cart, but as we didn’t know about the treatment and care of the horses, we decided not to use them.

You could also hire a bicycle if you had a backpack. We walked to our accommodation with our bags, which was fine but slow. Keep in mind some roads are sandy/dirt, so these will be harder.

Your accommodation may offer some kind of pick-up service.

I definitely recommend packing light if you visit the Gili Islands, as it just makes everything so much easier.

Should I Stay On Gili Trawangan Or Another Gili Island?

One question we had the first time we visited the Gili Islands was which Gili Island to stay on. All of the Gili Islands have no motorised transport, and all have crystal clear waters surrounding them.

So here’s a little breakdown of what makes them different, so you can decide where to stay in Gili Islands for you.

  • Gili Trawangan: The most popular island, Gili Trawangan is known as the party island, however, it’s evolved over the years and now offers much more variation in activities, restaurants and accommodations to suit all types of travellers, including solo travelers, friends, couples and families. Although it’s still the best island to stay for nightlife, there are areas where you can escape the crowds and have a more tranquil stay if that’s what you’re after.
  • Gili Meno: The most serene and least developed, ideal for those who want total peace and quiet. Gili Meno has fewer restaurants and activities, so it’s better suited for a remote getaway.
  • Gili Air: A great option for balance between relaxation and activity. Gili Air is a quieter island than Gili Trawangan with fewer tourists, but still has plenty of dining options. I personally prefer the beaches here for swimming and snorkelling. Gili Air is our favourite Gili island, but everyone is different.

So which island to choose? We loved Gili Trawangan for its lively atmosphere and lots to do, and Gili Air for its laid-back island vibes. For a first-time visit, we would recommend a couple of nights on each.

How To Get From Bali To Gili Trawangan

Gili T Fast Boats

The most common way to get to Gili Trawangan from Bali is on a fast-boat. The fast boats leave from various ports along the east coast of Bali, mainly Serangan Harbour and Padang Bai.

Depending on where you leave/arrive, it’s about 2.5 hours from port to port. But you also need to take into consideration the time it takes to get to the port from where you are staying in Bali.

It is worth noting that the crossing can be quite rough at times. April – June and October and November are generally considered to have the calmest seas.

Not all speed boat companies are created equal, so it’s worth looking at reviews before booking.

We have used Blue Water Express for all of our trips and have been happy. Of course, make sure to do your own research so you feel comfortable with your choice. I would recommend booking your ticket online in advance.

Another option is flying to Lombok from Bali, which is a great option if you’re also planning to explore Lombok or want to avoid the boat ride. Once you land in Lombok, it will be a couple of hours drive to get to the port, but from here it’s only a 15-minute boat ride to the Gili Islands.

You can read our full articles here for more details on how to get from Bali to Gili T, and how to get from Nusa Lembongan to Gili T (which is now actually from Nusa Penida) here.

When’s The Best Time To Visit Gili Trawangan

The dry season will have the best weather, generally speaking (there are always exceptions), which runs from April to September.

Even though the Gili Islands have their own micro-climate, travelling there in the dry season means less chance of storms during the boat crossing.

The peak season is July, August and around Christmas and New Year. Some of the calmest seas of the year are from April to June, however, again, this can vary day to day.

So with all this considered, we would recommend visiting the Gili Islands between April and June or September/October.

With this guide, you’re all set to find the best accommodation for your stay in Gili Trawangan, no matter your budget or preferences. Whether you’re looking for luxury, a quiet retreat, or a place close to the action, Gili T has a range of options to make your holiday unforgettable.
